India urges UN Security Council to protect maritime shipping from geopolitical tensions
At a United Nations Security Council meeting, India's Permanent Representative, P. Harish, asserted that commercial maritime traffic must not be used as a target for geopolitical tensions. Speaking during an Arria-formula meeting convened by Bahrain, Harish emphasized that navigational rights should not be subject to coercion, threats, or arbitrary interference.
India has faced direct consequences from conflicts in the Strait of Hormuz, including economic disruptions to oil and gas supplies and rising petroleum prices. The nation has also reported casualties among its sailors, including an incident in July involving Iranian attacks on UAE-registered ships and a June protest regarding the killing of Indian sailors during a US operation involving a Palau-registered vessel.
Harish warned that maritime insecurity at key chokepoints has global implications for energy and food security, potentially increasing freight and insurance costs. He called for the international community to establish coordinated frameworks for evacuating seafarers from conflict zones and to build maritime systems capable of withstanding economic shocks.
