India-US trade deal nearly finalized in principle, says envoy
The proposed trade agreement between the United States and India is nearing completion, with substantive issues largely resolved. U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor stated that the deal is “almost done in principle,” noting that current efforts are focused on finalizing the legal and technical language of the text.
Gor emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, citing the personal relationship between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a driver for results-oriented cooperation. He described the bilateral relationship as a natural alignment between two major economies that will help shape the global order.
Regarding potential economic friction, Gor addressed a bipartisan proposal in the U.S. Congress to impose 100% tariffs on nations purchasing Russian oil. He clarified that this is not a White House initiative and that President Trump has not advocated for such measures, as the administration remains focused on ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
