India-US trade negotiations reach plateau, says Finance Minister

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced at the Munich Leaders Meeting in New Delhi that trade negotiations between India and the United States have reached a “plateau.” She noted that while discussions are ongoing, both nations have reached a stage where making further concessions is “very, very difficult.”

Sitharaman highlighted that the current bilateral trade balance favors India, and that the United States is actively seeking to reduce its trade deficit with the country. The negotiations are proceeding under a framework for an interim trade agreement that was established in February 2026, as both nations work toward a broader bilateral trade agreement.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer previously indicated that a final agreement is not imminent, following discussions with Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. Key sticking points in the negotiations include market access for US agricultural and dairy products, tariffs, and digital trade. Despite the current impasse, officials from both sides suggested that they would continue to explore any remaining room for compromise.
