India voter list revision triggers legal disputes and strict enforcement

Election officials and judicial bodies in India are addressing issues related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. In Maharashtra, Chief Electoral Officer S. Chokkalingam has issued strict directives to officials during a training session for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) registration officers. Following the removal of over 3 million names of deceased or relocated voters, Chokkalingam emphasized that no eligible citizen should be excluded. He further instructed that police FIRs be filed against individuals who submit false information to remove legitimate voters.

In West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court declined an urgent hearing requested by a female police officer whose name was removed from the voter list due to a surname change following marriage. Justice Krishna Rao questioned the necessity for an immediate hearing, noting that the officer remains in active service. However, the court did grant urgent relief to an army aspirant whose inability to obtain a domicile certificate due to voter list discrepancies threatened his participation in upcoming recruitment phases.
