India voter list revisions spark controversy in Delhi and Goa
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process for voter lists has sparked controversy across multiple Indian regions. In Delhi, the draft voter list following the first phase of the SIR shows a significant reduction in numbers. While the previous assembly election recorded approximately 1.45 crore voters, the new draft lists only 97 lakh, indicating that roughly 47 lakh names have been removed or are subject to notices. These notices have been issued to various high-profile individuals, including political leaders and government officials, regarding discrepancies in name, address, or age.
In Goa, the Chief Electoral Officer addressed concerns regarding 97 eligible voters who were missing from the final voter list published in February. Officials stated that many of these individuals have since been included through door-to-door processing by Booth Level Officers, with actions continuing for the remaining cases. The CEO emphasized that ‘no eligible voter will be left behind.’
The discrepancies in the SIR process have drawn political criticism, with opposition leaders questioning the integrity of the revisions and the potential for electoral manipulation.
