India warns UN of global instability and weaponization of resources

Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar warned that the world is living “on the brink of the abyss” due to continuous threats and pressure. He noted that the inability to maintain peace is weakening security and slowing global development, with countries distant from conflicts still paying the price for wars they did not start.

Jaishankar highlighted a trend of “hyper-competition” where finance, market access, supply chains, and technology are being weaponized. He expressed deep concern regarding tensions in the Gulf, the targeting of commercial vessels, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. He emphasized that these crises involving food, fuel, and financing have disproportionately impacted the Global South.

Regarding West Asia and the Middle East, he called for restraint, de-escalation, and the protection of civilians, advocating for a two-state solution to achieve lasting peace.
