India demands official map accuracy for Jammu and Kashmir after UN vote
India has expressed that any depiction of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh must conform to its official national map. This stance follows India’s vote in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution titled ‘Correct the Map: Rebalancing Global Cartographic Representation and Promoting Equitable Representation of the World’s Regions, Particularly Africa.’
The resolution, sponsored by Togo, aims to encourage the use of equal-area map projections to more accurately preserve the relative sizes of continental landmasses. The measure was adopted with 164 votes in favor, while the United States was the sole dissenting vote. Several countries, including Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia, and Ukraine, abstained.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that India’s support is based on the scientific principle of equal-area representation and does not constitute an endorsement of any specific map or political cartography. He emphasized that the resolution does not address international boundaries, disputed territories, or place names, and reiterated that India’s position on its sovereignty and territorial integrity remains ‘clear, consistent and non-negotiable.’
