India weighs importing LNG from Russia's Arctic region

India is reportedly considering the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) produced in Russia's Arctic zone. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said the move is part of a broader expansion of energy and logistics cooperation between the two nations, including joint development of oil and gas fields such as Vankorneft, Taas‑Yuryakh and the Sakhalin‑1 project.

Both sides are also exploring ways to boost maritime trade via the Vladivostok–Chennai corridor and the Northern Sea Route. A memorandum signed in December 2025 established training for crews operating in polar waters, and a second memorandum on cargo shipping along the Northern Sea Route is expected soon. India currently meets about half of its gas demand through LNG imports, largely from Gulf suppliers, and is seeking alternatives amid disruptions from the ongoing Iran conflict.
