India: Women emerge as autonomous electoral constituency
In recent elections across northern and western India, women have emerged as a distinct and autonomous electoral constituency. This shift is attributed to various government schemes designed under the framework of ‘gender empowerment,’ which provide financial assistance and social security directly to women.
In Tamil Nadu, historical initiatives by leaders like M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa promoted female entrepreneurship, maternity leave, and representation in civic bodies. Similar trends are seen in Bihar, where Chief Minister Nitish Kumar implemented direct benefit transfers, subsidized bicycles and uniforms for girls, and reserved 35 percent of government jobs for women.
In Maharashtra, the National Democratic Alliance’s ‘Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme significantly influenced women’s voting patterns. Looking toward the 2027 elections in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has promised financial installments for women to secure their support. These developments suggest that women are increasingly voting as an independent group, often overriding traditional caste-based affiliations.
