India hockey teams suffer World Cup defeats to Netherlands

In the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, both the Indian men's and women's teams suffered setbacks against the host nation, the Netherlands, in the second round of competition.

The Indian men's team lost 3-1 to the Netherlands in Amstelveen. Despite a goalless first half and a resilient defensive effort, the Dutch secured goals through Duco Telgenkamp, Tjep Hoedemakers, and Thijs van Dam. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored India's lone goal via a penalty corner. Following the loss, India's men's coach, Sjoerd Marijne, criticized the tournament's tight scheduling, noting that India played on consecutive days while the Netherlands had rest.

The Indian women's team also fell to the Netherlands with a 2-0 defeat. Goals from Yibbi Jansen and Frederique Matla secured the win for the defending champions. The loss places India in a difficult position for semifinal qualification, making their upcoming match against Australia a critical ‘do or die’ encounter. India's progression will also depend on the results of matches involving China.

Both teams face high-stakes upcoming fixtures as they fight to maintain their hopes for a semifinal berth in the tournament.
