India women's hockey team secures historic fifth-place World Cup finish
The Indian women’s hockey team achieved its best finish at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup since 1974, securing fifth place after defeating Germany 3-1 in the 5/6th-place classification match. Under coach Sjoerd Marijne, the team was noted for its defensive discipline and strong goalkeeping, highlighted by performances from veteran Savita Punia and newcomer Bichu Devi Kharibam.
In contrast, the Indian men’s team finished in eighth place following a 3-5 defeat against Argentina. The men's campaign was marked by defensive struggles and a lack of midfield control, raising concerns regarding their preparation for upcoming competitions such as the Asian Games.
