Indian academic institutions integrate AI into curricula and research

Leading Indian higher education institutions are shifting from banning Artificial Intelligence to integrating it into academic frameworks. Top technical and management institutes, including IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, ISB, and IISER Pune, are implementing policies that allow controlled AI usage. For example, IIM Ahmedabad has distributed 1,500 AI licenses to students and faculty, while IIM Bangalore has utilized custom-built AI chatbots within secure testing platforms to evaluate students on prompt engineering and parameter tuning.

In a significant research development, IIT-Kharagpur has announced the establishment of the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI. Supported by an investment of Rs 35 crore from the institute, the Vinod Gupta family, and an anonymous alumnus, the school will focus on Physical AI—systems that interact with the physical world through scientific principles, robotics, and autonomous systems. This initiative aims to advance fields such as physics-informed machine learning and digital twins, with academic programs expected to begin in the upcoming session.
