Mosquitoes develop growing resistance to common insecticide α‑cypermethrin

Researchers have found that an Indian strain of the mosquito Aedes aegypti is showing early signs of resistance to the widely used insecticide α‑cypermethrin. Laboratory tests recorded a mortality rate of 97.91 percent when the mosquitoes were exposed to the recommended diagnostic dose, indicating that the vector is beginning to survive the chemical. The study identified a surge in detoxification enzymes and protective proteins that mosquitoes produce shortly after insecticide exposure, providing a biological defence that reduces the insecticide’s effectiveness.

Scientists warn that repeated use of the same insecticides favours genetic mutations that allow mosquitoes to neutralise the chemicals, making traditional vector‑control programmes harder to maintain. They recommend integrated strategies such as rotating insecticides with different modes of action, eliminating breeding sites, and continuous monitoring of mosquito populations for resistance markers.
