Indian Air Force marks 94th anniversary with focus on capability

India marked the 94th anniversary of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on October 8, 2026, with major celebrations including a ceremonial parade and aerial displays at Hindon Air Force Station and Jodhpur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu extended greetings to air warriors, praising their courage and professionalism.

Outgoing Air Chief Marshal AP Singh emphasized that the IAF has transitioned from being platform-centric to capability-centric, noting that operational preparedness is the true measure of strength. He cited the success of Operation Sindoor, which demonstrated the force's ability to respond rapidly to combat contingencies and defend airspace against drone and UAV attacks.

To address long-term security challenges and a shrinking fighter squadron count, the IAF is focusing on indigenous development and advanced technology. This includes the Astra missile program, with DRDO working on the Astra MK-3 to achieve a range exceeding 300 kilometers, and the procurement of Tejas Mk1A fighters and multi-role fighters. The Air Chief also noted the importance of international cooperation, highlighting the participation of F-35s in recent exercises.
