Indian Air Force seeks 150 advanced jet trainers

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated the procurement process for 150 advanced jet trainers (AJT) to serve as Stage-III training aircraft. This large-scale acquisition aims to replace the aging BAE Hawk Mk-132 fleet, which has been the primary trainer since 2008.

The new aircraft will bridge the gap between initial training and operational fighter squadrons, preparing pilots for modern platforms such as the Sukhoi-30MKI, Rafale, Tejas, and the future Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Required technologies include fly-by-wire controls, glass cockpits, AI-based maintenance, and networked warfare capabilities, such as airborne radar and electronic warfare systems.

Under the “Buy (Indian) or better” defense policy, the procurement emphasizes indigenous manufacturing. Foreign manufacturers must demonstrate their ability to integrate production and supply-chain activities within India. While a Request for Information (RFI) has been issued, a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) is tentatively expected in December 2027. Deliveries are projected to begin in the mid-2030s.
