The Indian Defence Ministry is planning to procure 60 Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) to replace the aging Soviet-era Antonov An-32 fleet. The procurement programme, estimated to cost approximately Rs 1 lakh crore, aims to modernize the Indian Air Force’s airlift capabilities and bolster domestic aerospace manufacturing.

The tender specifies that 12 aircraft will be supplied in flyaway condition, while 48 are to be manufactured in India with substantial indigenous-content requirements. The new aircraft are expected to have a payload capacity between 18 and 30 tonnes, providing greater operational flexibility than the current An-32 fleet.
