South Asian Americans signal shift toward Democrats in upcoming midterms

A survey conducted by the advocacy group Indian American Impact reveals that 25 percent of South Asian Americans who voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election plan to support Democratic candidates in the upcoming November 3 midterm elections.

The polling, which included 800 registered voters, identified the cost of living (65 percent), healthcare (53 percent), employment and wages (33 percent), and education (28 percent) as the primary issues driving voter concerns. The survey noted a significant rise in perceived discrimination, with 90 percent of respondents reporting they had experienced or knew someone who had faced discrimination.

Among the participants, 87 percent were Indian-American. While 67 percent of those who previously supported Trump still intend to back the Republican Party, the shift toward Democrats is notable as the community seeks to address concerns regarding xenophobia and racial resentment. In contrast, 96 percent of those who voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 plan to continue supporting Democratic candidates in the midterms.
