Indian Army DGIS head reviews digital capability initiatives at Eastern Command

Lt Gen Harsh Chhibber, Director General of Information Systems (DGIS) for the Indian Army, visited the Eastern Command headquarters in Kolkata to review digital capability initiatives. During the visit, Chhibber met with Lt Gen VMB Krishnan, Army Commander of the Eastern Command, to discuss strengthening the military’s digital infrastructure and leveraging emerging technologies to improve operational effectiveness.

The Indian Army is currently scaling up the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and big data analytics to streamline operations and enhance decision-making. Key objectives include processing large volumes of battlefield data to improve situational awareness and response times. Planned technological implementations include the use of large language models for report summarization, voice-to-text services, facial recognition, and pattern detection.

By 2027, the Army aims to utilize technology to monitor feeds from satellites, drones, aircraft, and ground sensors. These advancements are intended to support counterintelligence, surveillance, logistics, and wargaming simulations. Furthermore, the Army plans to embed AI requirements into the technical baseline for all future procurements and may explore retrofitting existing legacy systems with AI capabilities.
