India automobile retail sales see 6.5% decline during Navratri

Total automobile retail sales in India fell by 6.5% during the 10-day Navratri period, reaching 11.23 lakh units compared to 12.01 lakh units during the same period last year. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the decline was most pronounced in the passenger vehicle segment, which saw a 21.91% drop.

FADA President Sai Giridhar noted that the year-on-year dip is largely due to a high base effect. Last year's Navratri lasted 11 days and coincided with the implementation of GST 2.0, which triggered a surge in pent-up demand. When compared to 2024, however, overall sales show a 26.76% increase, and passenger vehicle sales have grown by 10.39%.

Individual manufacturers reported varying results. Maruti Suzuki saw a 35% retail growth between Ganesh Chaturthi and Dussehra, driven by a doubling of SUV sales and a surge in pending bookings to 2.7 lakh units. Tata Motors reported delivering over 50,000 vehicles during the festive period, including a single-day peak of 10,000 deliveries on Vijayadashami. Hyundai Motor India also noted a 30% year-on-year increase in registrations during the Shradh and Navratri period.
