Indian‑Flagged Cargo Vessel Sinks After Red Sea Attack, Crew Rescued
On 4 August 2026 an Indian‑flagged commercial cargo ship, MSV Faize Noore Oliya, was struck near Yemen’s coast in the Red Sea. The vessel was hit by a projectile from an explosive drone boat, suspected to be of Iranian manufacture and linked to the Houthi militia. The attack caused the ship to capsize and sink about 13 nautical miles south of the port city of Al Hudaydah.
All 14 crew members – 13 Indian nationals and one Yemeni sailor – were rescued without casualties. Yemen’s government‑aligned National Resistance Forces, together with the Yemeni Coast Guard and Navy, carried out a joint rescue operation and transferred the crew to the port of Mokha for medical assistance.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the unprovoked attack, urged an end to attacks on commercial shipping and called for the restoration of free navigation through international waterways. The incident heightened concerns that the Bab al‑Mandab strait could be effectively closed, threatening global trade and energy prices. It is the first foreign‑flagged vessel sunk in the Red Sea since the Houthi group began threatening Saudi navigation.
