Indian Coast Guard rescues 23 crew from tilting chemical tanker
The Indian Coast Guard successfully rescued 23 crew members from the MT Seagull 9, a Belize-flagged chemical tanker, off the coast of Paradip in Odisha. The vessel was carrying approximately 9,000 metric tonnes of palm oil when it experienced engine failure and ballast tank flooding, causing it to tilt dangerously.
In response to a distress call, the ICGS Vishwast was deployed to the scene. A specialist damage control team boarded the tanker to stabilize the vessel using submersible de-flooding pumps and by sealing damaged seawater pipelines. The tanker was eventually stabilized and towed toward the Paradip anchorage to prevent it from capsizing.
