Indian courts address protest permissions and police appointment disputes

The Delhi High Court has declined to issue immediate directions regarding a plea by the Kshatriya Karni Sena to hold a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on September 6. The group intends to protest against reservation policies and University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. Justice Amit Mahajan noted that the court cannot grant permission without hearing the Delhi Police, who had previously rejected the request due to preparations for the BRICS Summit. The court suggested the organization consider changing the protest date and has scheduled the matter for further consideration on September 9.

Separately, the Supreme Court of India has deferred a hearing to September 7 regarding a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the appointment process for the Director General of Police (DGP) in Odisha. The petition alleges that the state government is attempting to include a junior officer in the candidate pool, which would violate the 2006 Prakash Singh judgment requiring the UPSC to shortlist the three most senior eligible officers to prevent political interference. The court granted additional time for the amicus curiae to file a report.
