Indian courts issue acquittals in murder and POCSO cases
A Delhi court has acquitted an individual named Javed in a 2016 triple murder case due to a lack of concrete evidence. The case involved the deaths of two women and a girl in June 2016. The court noted that the prosecution failed to provide scientific or circumstantial evidence to link the accused to the crime or the destruction of evidence. The primary suspect in the case has been absconding since 2022.
In a separate legal development, the Supreme Court of India acquitted a man previously convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court overturned previous rulings from the Meghalaya High Court and a trial court regarding a 2015 sexual assault allegation involving a minor with an intellectual disability. The bench ruled that the evidence fell short of the required legal standards, citing significant delays in filing the FIR, contradictory testimonies, and the victim's inability to identify the accused in court.
