Indian engineer detained in Moscow and pressured to join Russian army

Sneha Chandan Gupta, an Indian woman currently in Moscow, has alleged that her husband, Chandan Gupta, was detained by Russian police on Sunday. Chandan, an engineer from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was residing in Moscow on a ‘highly qualified specialist’ visa through a company based in Noida.

In a video appeal, Sneha claimed that her husband is being pressured to join the Russian military while in custody. She suggested that personnel shortages in the Russian armed forces have led to efforts to recruit foreign nationals. She also alleged that her husband had been harassed around the time of Moscow Day prior to his detention.

The Indian Embassy has reportedly sought consular access to Chandan Gupta. Sneha has appealed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene and ensure her husband’s safe return to India.
