Indian stock markets decline amid rising crude oil prices

Indian benchmark equity indices, the Sensex and Nifty 50, extended their losing streaks through late October 2026, driven primarily by surging crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Brent crude rose toward $114-$116 per barrel, a significant increase that has heightened concerns regarding inflation, the national import bill, and the stability of the Indian Rupee.

The sell-off was broad-based, with significant pressure observed in mid-cap and small-cap indices. Over a four-session period, BSE market capitalization saw a substantial decline, with some reports indicating a loss of approximately ₹21 lakh crore in investor wealth. While the IT sector showed some resilience, sectors such as FMCG, media, and consumer durables faced heavy selling.

In addition to energy costs, persistent selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) contributed to the downward trend. On October 22, FIIs were net sellers of approximately ₹3,459 crore, partially offset by domestic institutional investor (DII) buying.

Separately, Jio Platforms' highly anticipated IPO saw strong demand, with the offering being oversubscribed by approximately 5.6 times across various categories, including significant interest from qualified institutional buyers.
