Indian farmers protest voter list revision and plan major rally
Farmers in Agra, represented by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Tikait) and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, staged a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The demonstration turned volatile during a march toward the collectorate, resulting in physical altercations between protesters and administration officials. During the scuffle, City Magistrate Amit Kumar fell to the ground, and BKU District President Rajveer Lavania sustained a hand injury.
The protesters demanded the immediate cancellation of the SIR process and the restoration of voting rights for citizens removed from the lists. They also called for an investigation into the Chief Election Commissioner and greater transparency in election reforms. Additionally, the group raised local grievances, including electricity billing errors affecting 405 farmers and land acquisition issues.
In a separate development, the Bharatiya Kisan Union has announced a ‘Kisan Kranti Mahapanchayat’ scheduled for October 26 at Mundera Mandi in Prayagraj. National spokesperson Chaudhary Rakesh Tikait is expected to attend the rally, which aims to address issues concerning farmers, laborers, and the rural economy, such as crop pricing and agricultural costs. The organization has also requested increased security following a reported attack on its state office.
