Indian firms advance space-based diagnostics and drug manufacturing

Indian companies are advancing research into the intersection of space technology and life sciences. Redcliffe Labs and Skyroot Aerospace have partnered for the DRIFT-1 experiment, a 90-day mission in Low Earth Orbit. The project aims to test the stability and performance of dry diagnostic reagents in space compared to ground-based controls, potentially improving diagnostic resilience in environments lacking cold-chain infrastructure on Earth.

Separately, Bhubaneswar-based start-up Serendipity Space successfully tested pharmaceutical manufacturing processes in near-space conditions. Using an orbital-class satellite prototype named Alchemy during a stratospheric balloon mission, the company demonstrated drug crystallization in microgravity. This process aims to produce superior crystal structures for monoclonal antibody therapeutics and small molecules, which could lead to more stable and effective drug formulations, such as converting intravenous treatments into at-home injections.
