Indian government clarifies film screening status for IDSFFK festival

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has addressed disputes regarding film screening permissions for the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK). While reports suggested that 31 films were denied censor exemptions, the Ministry clarified that no films have been denied permission. Instead, 32 films are currently under review or awaiting further action.

According to government sources, the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy submitted 347 films for exemption from certification requirements. Of these, 291 have been granted exemptions and 24 are already certified. The remaining 32 films are being processed through various channels: 20 have been referred to the Ministry of External Affairs for no-objection certificates, four to the Ministry of Home Affairs, one to the Ministry of Defence, and one to the Central Board of Film Certification for clarification. Additionally, six films require more detailed synopses and screeners.

The controversy follows statements from Kerala Culture Minister P C Vishnunadh and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, the latter of whom characterized the reported denials as an ‘assault on the freedom of expression.’ The festival is scheduled to take place from September 25 to 30.
