Punjab grain stock: Centre to lift 18 LMT of old grain by September 30

The Indian government has agreed to lift 18 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of old grain stock from Punjab's mandis by September 30. This decision follows meetings in Delhi between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi (Food and Supplies) and Manohar Lal Khattar (Power).

The movement of the old stock is intended to clear essential storage space for the upcoming paddy procurement season, which is expected to begin on October 1. Punjab anticipates a bumper crop, with expectations to supply approximately 170 LMT of high-quality rice this year.

Chief Minister Mann emphasized that securing adequate storage is critical for both the livelihoods of Punjab's farmers and national food security. He also discussed the state's electricity needs with the Union Power Minister. To ensure a seamless season, the state is focusing on timely procurement and payments to prevent difficulties for farmers when the new harvest arrives.
