Indian Governors emphasize anti-drug initiatives in Tripura and Assam

Governors in the Indian states of Tripura and Assam are intensifying calls for social and legal action to combat drug abuse among youth.

In Tripura, Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu called for a united effort to establish a ‘Nasha Mukt Tripura’ (drug-free Tripura). Speaking at a Ravan Dahan event in Agartala, he noted that while law enforcement has identified hotspots and arrested suppliers, legal measures alone are insufficient. He urged families and parents to take an active role in protecting young people and ensuring access to rehabilitation.

In Assam, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on regional initiatives such as ‘Nashamukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat,’ which focuses on substance abuse awareness and youth empowerment. This follows reports from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding significant drug seizures. According to state data, authorities seized drugs worth approximately Rs 80 crore last month, contributing to a long-term trend where over 32,000 people have been arrested in connection with trafficking between 2011 and July 2026.
