India celebrates 80th Independence Day with global diaspora events
India's 80th Independence Day was marked by widespread celebrations both in India and across the global diaspora. In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led ceremonies at the Red Fort in Delhi, emphasizing national development and the role of youth. Regional celebrations included major events in Sikkim and various local observances.
In the United States, the Indian-American community held large-scale events to honor the milestone and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the U.S. In New York, the 44th annual India Day Parade on Madison Avenue drew approximately 200,000 people, featuring Governor Kathy Hochul. The Empire State Building was illuminated in the colors of the Indian tricolor, and a Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest Flagpole Number’ was set in Parsippany, New Jersey, using over 1,300 flags.
Other notable diaspora activities included flag-hoisting ceremonies at the Indian Consulate in New York and India House in Washington, D.C., as well as diplomatic celebrations in Liberia. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani participated in a local celebration in Queens, marking his presence as the city’s first Indian American mayor.
