Indian judiciary: Supreme Court and High Court rulings

The Supreme Court of India has ruled that redetermination of land acquisition compensation under Section 28A of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, cannot be based on an appellate court judgment. The Court clarified that Section 28A applies specifically to awards passed by a Reference Court, not judgments from appellate courts exercising jurisdiction under Section 54.

In judicial administration, the one-year anniversary of the Rejanish K. V. v. K. Deepa judgment has prompted discussions regarding the 25% Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE) quota. The ruling allows in-service judicial officers with seven years of combined experience to compete in direct recruitment for District Judge positions, potentially altering the existing recruitment architecture.

Regional High Court updates include the Gujarat High Court granting anticipatory bail to family members accused of instigating a triple talaq case. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court rejected an election petition that challenged the narrow victory of a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate.
