Indian Rupee and Forex Reserves Face Volatility
The Indian rupee has experienced significant volatility against the US dollar, recently breaching the 96 level before seeing some recovery. The currency's movement has been influenced by US Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, fluctuations in US bond yields, and changes in Brent crude oil prices. Analysts note that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has established a defense zone around the 96.00 mark, intervening to prevent disorderly depreciation.
India's foreign exchange reserves stood at $780.78 billion for the week ending September 11, marking a decrease of approximately $4.92 billion from the previous week. This follows a period of substantial growth that saw reserves reach a record high of $785.71 billion in early September. The decline was primarily driven by a reduction in foreign currency assets, which fell to $645.77 billion.
