Indian metro networks report record ridership surges

Major metro networks in India have reported significant surges in ridership. In Delhi, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recorded a historic high on September 17, with 8,244,903 passengers traveling in a single day. This spike was partly attributed to a strike by private agency drivers of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), which left many commuters without bus services. To manage the influx, DMRC deployed additional trains and increased trips during peak hours.

Similarly, Pune Metro experienced a substantial increase in daily commuters during the Ganesh festival. Within four days, daily ridership grew by over 110,000 passengers. This surge led to a significant rise in daily revenue, which increased by approximately ₹18.41 lakh, rising from ₹43,19,707 on September 14 to ₹61,61,123 by September 17. Commuters increasingly opted for the metro to avoid heavy traffic and parking issues caused by festival crowds.
