Indian military veterans criticize Congress spokesperson's remarks on retired officers

Military veterans in India have criticized Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh following his controversial remarks regarding retired Indian Army officers. Singh suggested that retired officers participating in television debates and politics, while utilizing subsidized Defence canteens, could jeopardize civilian control and potentially lead to military coups similar to those seen in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Singh proposed that retired officers should sign declarations to stay away from civilian politics, stating that their role is to take orders from civilian heads rather than dictating terms. In response, veterans asserted that retired members of the armed forces are full citizens with constitutional rights to vote, contest elections, and express their views. They emphasized that India’s system maintains civilian control over serving personnel and that veterans continue to fulfill civic duties, such as paying taxes, after their service.
