Indian ministers criticize Rahul Gandhi over Captain Smit Machar

Indian government ministers have criticized opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and members of the Gandhi family, for failing to publicly praise Captain Smit Machar. Machar is credited with preventing a Flydubai aircraft from crashing after a co-pilot allegedly attempted to seize control of the flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar questioned why the opposition has time for other issues but not to recognize the courage of an Indian hero. Similarly, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy stated that the nation is proud of Machar's bravery, which he compared to the prevention of a 9/11-style attack, and expressed surprise at the lack of recognition from Congress leaders.

During the incident, passengers reportedly entered the cockpit and subdued the co-pilot following warnings from Captain Machar. The aircraft was eventually landed safely in Saudi Arabia with the assistance of two Flydubai pilots who were traveling as passengers on the flight.
