Indian Navy Chief highlights maritime self-reliance and global competition

Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, highlighted the Indian Navy’s progress toward self-reliance during the News18 DEFCON 2026 conference in New Delhi. He noted that India has successfully constructed over 100 warships, submarines, and specialized vessels within domestic shipyards, marking a significant transition from import dependence to indigenous production.

Admiral Swaminathan emphasized that the maritime domain is becoming increasingly competitive in the 21st century, noting that geography is being weaponized and there is growing contestation over sea resources. He expressed concern regarding conflicts in West Asia and the changing nature of the seas, which were traditionally viewed as a free and open common heritage for humanity.

To maintain tactical superiority, the Admiral stressed the need for long-term strategic foresight and the local production of advanced maritime capabilities. Key achievements mentioned include the construction of the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard Limited. The Navy continues to collaborate with industry partners to ensure the rapid induction of new technologies into its forces.
