The Indian Navy has commissioned two new vessels, marking significant advancements in domestic defense manufacturing. On October 16, 2026, the INS Samarthak was inducted at the Naval Base Karwar in Karnataka. Built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at its Kattupalli shipyard, the INS Samarthak is the first major multi-purpose vessel commissioned by a private shipyard. It features over 75 percent indigenous content and is designed for diverse roles, including maritime reconnaissance, offshore patrols, and acting as a mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems. The vessel will also serve as a platform for testing indigenous weapons and sensors.
Additionally, the Indian Navy commissioned the INS Mangrol (P82) on October 12 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. A Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), the INS Mangrol was constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited. The vessel is designed for operations in coastal and shallow waters, specializing in anti-submarine warfare, underwater surveillance, and mine warfare. It boasts over 80 percent indigenous content and utilizes waterjet propulsion for high maneuverability in littoral environments.
