The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Nipun, its second indigenous Nistar-class Diving Support Vessel (DSV), at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The commissioning ceremony was led by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.

Built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam, the 119.4-metre vessel features approximately 75 per cent indigenous content. It is designed to enhance the Navy’s capabilities in deep-sea diving, underwater intervention, salvage, and submarine rescue operations. The ship is capable of supporting saturation, air, and heliox diving at depths of up to 300 metres.

INS Nipun is equipped with advanced systems, including Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for inspection and monitoring, a specialized diving complex, and dynamic positioning capabilities. It can also serve as a mother ship for a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) to assist in submarine emergencies. Alongside its sister ship, INS Nistar, the vessel strengthens India’s ability to respond to underwater contingencies and maritime disasters, potentially serving as a rescue partner for friendly navies in the Indian Ocean Region.
