Indian Navy foils piracy attempt near Gulf of Aden

The guided‑missile destroyer INS Kolkata intercepted a suspected piracy attack on the merchant vessel MV Mashallah 1 in the Western Indian Ocean near the Gulf of Aden. Acting on intelligence, the ship deployed its helicopter for aerial surveillance and sent boarding teams to secure the area, preventing any hijacking or damage to the vessel.

The incident highlights a resurgence of Somali pirate networks, which are now operating beyond 1,000 nautical miles from Somalia’s coast and using larger mother ships. The Joint Maritime Information Centre has raised the piracy threat assessment to “severe.” The Indian Navy, maintaining uninterrupted anti‑piracy deployments since 2008, described itself as a “preferred security partner” and “first responder” amid broader maritime security challenges, including Houthi missile attacks in the Red Sea.
