Indian Navy launches next-generation patrol vessel ‘Shruti’

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has launched ‘Shruti’, the second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) for the Indian Navy. The launch took place on August 11, 2026, in Kolkata, marking a significant milestone in India’s indigenous shipbuilding efforts under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.

The vessel, named after the ancient Vedic scriptures, is designed for multi-domain operations including maritime surveillance, anti-piracy missions, search and rescue, and the protection of offshore assets. It is also intended to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, particularly in the Indian Ocean region.

Construction of the NGOPV series is being carried out concurrently by two shipyards: GRSE and Goa Shipyard Limited. The ‘Shruti’ follows the recent launch of the first NGOPV, ‘Sanghmitra’, in May 2026. The ships are indigenously designed and built to enhance the Indian Navy’s maritime security and rapid response capabilities.
