Indian Ocean nations modernize tsunami warning systems

Countries in the Indian Ocean region are modernizing their tsunami detection and warning systems to minimize the time between a seismic event and the issuance of alerts to coastal communities. This technological advancement utilizes a complex infrastructure including seafloor pressure recorders, ocean buoys, seismic stations, satellite technology, and intelligent submarine cables.

The current framework follows the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which caused over 230,000 deaths and highlighted the lack of a regional warning system. In response, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System was established in 2005, coordinated by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The system currently includes 27 member states working to connect scientific detection with national alert centers and risk management authorities.
