Indian Parliament awaits formal prorogation after Monsoon session adjournment

The Indian Parliament's Monsoon session remains in a state of limbo ten days after both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die. While such sessions are typically prorogued within three to four days, no formal prorogation notification has been issued, leading to political speculation regarding the government's next moves.

Opposition leaders, including Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, have questioned the abnormal delay. Ramesh suggested the government might be seeking a two-thirds majority to pass a Constitutional Amendment Bill related to delimitation and women's reservation in a special session. The proposed legislation aims to increase Lok Sabha seats, potentially addressing concerns from southern states regarding population-based seat distribution.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the government has not committed to a fixed timeline for reintroducing the legislation, noting that leadership will decide on the timing after complete deliberation.
