Indian Parliamentary panel to discuss urea diversion and fertiliser subsidies

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilisers is scheduled to hold three meetings to address critical industrial and pharmaceutical issues in India.

The first session will examine a case study regarding the wood panel industry. Representatives from the Pahle India Foundation (PIF) will present findings on the alleged diversion of subsidised, neem-coated agricultural urea into the industrial market. The study suggests that manufacturers of plywood, particle board, and medium-density fibreboard (MDF) may be using subsidised urea for urea-formaldehyde resins due to the significant price gap between agricultural and industrial-grade urea. This diversion raises concerns regarding subsidy leakages and fair competition.

The second meeting will involve a briefing from the Department of Fertilisers concerning the evaluation and monitoring of fertiliser subsidy and innovation schemes. The third meeting will focus on the Department of Pharmaceuticals, specifically addressing the awareness and trust deficit regarding generic versus branded medicines.
