Indian police officers face dismissal and suspension over bribery allegations
In separate incidents in India, police officers have faced disciplinary action following allegations of bribery.
In Punjab, the government of Bhagwant Mann dismissed Inspector Sunita Rani from her position as Station House Officer of the Kot Ise Khan police station in Moga district. The dismissal followed her arrest by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on September 26 for allegedly accepting a ₹50,000 bribe. The case, registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, also involved allegations that Rani threatened an individual with implication in a drug-related case. The dismissal order cited previous complaints regarding her conduct and misbehaviour with the public.
In Tamil Nadu, Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner Deshmukh Shekhar Sanjay suspended head constable Swarna Raj on September 30. The suspension occurred after an audio recording went viral on social media, allegedly capturing Swarna Raj demanding money from a motorcyclist during a vehicle check at the Melakarungulam check-post. The recording documented the interaction after the motorcyclist was found to have invalid insurance, leading to an official inquiry into the incident.
