Indian ports report significant cargo and container handling growth
Major Indian ports have reported substantial increases in operational throughput. Chennai Port Authority achieved a five-year high in daily container handling on October 25, 2026, processing 9,929 TEUs in a single day. This performance surpasses the previous post-pandemic record and approaches the port's all-time record set in 2017.
To support this growth, Chennai Port has implemented an Empty Container Yard and digitalized end-to-end processes through ONOP. The port has also allocated additional space for transshipment containers impacted by the West Asia crisis.
Separately, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority reported handling 25.18 million tonnes of cargo during the 2026-27 fiscal year through October, a 3.01 per cent increase over the same period last year. Container traffic at the port rose by 1.76 per cent. Notable increases were seen in coal and fertilizer handling, and the port recently managed its longest vessel to date, the M.V. CMA CGM THORIUM.
