Indian railway engineer arrested in Silchar bribery case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a senior section engineer of the Carriage and Wagon department of the Northeast Frontier Railway in Silchar, Assam. The official is accused of demanding a 1% commission – Rs 20,000 – on a pending Rs 20 lakh bill to clear the payment for a contractor’s work.
The CBI set up a trap after a complaint was lodged, caught the engineer red‑handed accepting the bribe, and placed him in custody. Searches are underway at his residence, and he is scheduled to appear before a Guwahati court.
The case follows other recent CBI actions against railway officials in different states for similar illegal gratification schemes.
