Indian Railways announces major infrastructure and PPP expansion

Indian Railways is undertaking significant infrastructure expansions through both state-sanctioned projects and public-private partnerships (PPP). In Andhra Pradesh, 42 railway projects worth ₹77,855 crore have been sanctioned, covering 4,768 km of track. These include 12 new lines and 30 multi-tracking or doubling projects. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the central allocation for Andhra Pradesh has increased significantly, with an outlay of ₹10,134 crore for 2026-27.

On a national scale, the ministry has identified 54 PPP projects valued at approximately ₹1.8 lakh crore. This pipeline includes large-scale infrastructure packages such as the ₹9,562-crore Itarsi-Manikpur third-line project and ₹21,000 crore for trainset maintenance depots. Nearly half of these proposed PPP projects focus on railway track construction. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways has recommended simpler approval procedures and clearer risk-sharing arrangements to attract investors to these developments.
