Indian Railways doubles fines for littering and hygiene violations

Indian Railways has implemented stricter cleanliness regulations by doubling the fines for activities that affect the hygiene of railway premises. Under the amended Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Amendment Rules, the maximum fine for littering or violating cleanliness protocols has increased from ₹500 to ₹1,000.

Prohibited activities include throwing litter outside designated areas, spitting, urinating, defecating, cooking, bathing, washing vehicles or utensils, and feeding animals or birds on railway premises. Additionally, unauthorized posting of posters or writing on train coaches and railway property is forbidden.

If an individual refuses to pay the prescribed penalty, they may be produced before a competent court. In such cases, the court has the authority to impose a higher fine of up to ₹2,000.
