Indian Railways enables online lower berth requests for pregnant women
Indian Railways has introduced a new facility allowing pregnant women to request lower berths directly through online booking systems. Previously, passengers had to visit physical reservation counters at railway stations to secure this accommodation.
The Railway Board has instructed the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) to implement the necessary technical changes to their websites and mobile applications. This update aims to simplify travel planning and reduce the physical strain of boarding or using upper and middle berths during pregnancy.
In a further effort to streamline the process, the requirement to submit a medical certificate at the time of booking has been removed. This change is intended to make the reservation procedure more efficient for expectant mothers.
